Yung Berg came hard last summer with his debut single, "Sexy Lady" and then made it even sexier for the ladies on "Sexy Can I" with Ray J. After blowing up the charts and working on becoming a household name, Yung Berg is ready to drop his debut album. MiddleChild caught up with the rapper to talk about the project and what he has planned for his fans.
MiddleChild: What's up Berg?
Yung Berg: What it is my nigg?
MiddleChild: Nothin much man. You've been busy ain't ya?
Yung Berg: Hell yea, man. We getting big right now. It's poppin.
MiddleChild: Who are you on the road with?
Yung Berg: Oh man. Right now I'm on the road just doing my thing. I'm actually in Atlanta about to work out a couple of features for a couple of kats that's about to come out this year or whatever and then I'm back out. I gotta head to Chicago because me and Ray got a show and then I'm back doing my own little thing.
MiddleChild: I see. I just left Atlanta last weekend. It's crazy right now, watch out for all the construction there.
Yung Berg: Oh yea. You know what it is. I'm happy to be here.
MiddleChild: I hear you. Well the last time we spoke you told me you were "Almost Famous", so do you feel that you're famous yet?
Yung Berg: Not yet. (laughs)
MiddleChild: (laughs) Right. Well this record you have with Ray J was a hot one. Did you expect it to be so huge?
Yung Berg: Ray J. said it was gonna be huge like that, but I was like "maybe not" at first and then after I started seeing the reaction I was like "Yea, this shit is about to be crazy."
MiddleChild: So how do you think that record helped you shine more light on your album you're about to drop?
Yung Berg: It really helped me out because it just established in maintaining my consistency. You know what I'm saying? I just want to maintain and be the best I can possibly be in it. I wanna continue to put out hit records and that's what it allowed me to do. It helped me bridge the gap from "Sexy Lady" to this point. Now everything is a go. The plan is in full motion and I'm just happy to be coming off a double platinum record.
MiddleChild: I'm loving the new single right now. Tell me about "The Business".
Yung Berg: Man. "The Business" is the jam of the summer yo. It is produced by myself and Rob Holiday. It was written completely by me, so when you hear my artist Casha singing, it's me that wrote the R&B on the record. So I'm just trying to establish and show people that's trying to be a Yung Boss...like I'm coming hard this year and showing it's about making hit records and I know how to do that. That's why I'm working with other people right now, trying to spread that love and show what's good.
MiddleChild: Cool. And tell me why you think your release will be the hottest of the year.
Yung Berg: Because there is nobody my age that's really creating music at the level that I'm creating it. Like when you listen to "The Business" and you sit and really realize that two twenty-two year old kats came together and produce such a hot record by themselves. I wrote all my music myself on there and not only that I'm a yung boss. Like I got the grind game all the way up. I don't have backing. No co-signer. No Jim Jones. No 50. And I love these people. But no Baby. Nobody in the game that was like "Yo. You gotta respect my yungin. Listen up." I came in myself. I took the records to the radio myself and they blew up. I really got my record deal myself and that's a real Yung Boss. Know what I'm saying?
MiddleChild: So doing all of that and putting yourself in this sort of whirl wind, what kind of lessons are you learning out there man?
Yung Berg: I mean I'm just learning to stay humble all the time and always stay working. I always do that so when you think I'm sleeping, I'm working.
MiddleChild: Cool. And last time we spoke you were telling me about all your guest features for the album. Have you decided which ones you're keeping for the final cut?
Yung Berg: Yea. The album definitely has Trey Songz, Lloyd, Amerie, Collie Buddz, Eve, Twista and most importantly we have the YB crew. We have Money Gram. We got all my people and we got Casha who is on the first single, "The Business" and we got her on another record.
MiddleChild: Sounds hot. Well being that we're in a technology driven age, how do you feel that Youtube and Myspace has helped you with your fan base?
Yung Berg: I embrace that totally because it gives people a chance to see what's going on in my life and see what's going on with me. So I embrace the technology wave because I just want to bring people closer into my world so they can see me when I'm creating and doing my thing.
MiddleChild: Now one record on the album that's going to give people a true representation of Yung Berg. What would that one be?
Yung Berg: "Outer Space" because I sing the whole song. It's not like a "Sensual Seduction", but like it will make Omarion go work on his crescendos. Like for real.
MiddleChild: (laughs) Oh. So you're singing too.
Yung Berg: Yea. I chose to sing on this track because like I wrote this and I wanted to...like I told you how I write. I wrote for Casha. I'm writing for Brandy's project. I'm working with Jackie Stewart. I'm heavily writing and I want to say that, but sometimes it doesn't connect if the music is not heard right now and is later released. So I did that just to let people know like "Yo. I really done this."
MiddleChild: That's what's up. Well it being Black Music Month, tell me what Black Music means to you.
Yung Berg: Oh man. I mean when black people come together and just grow and allow people in the music world to touch everyone around them. It's great man.
MiddleChild: So when can we expect the album to drop?
Yung Berg: August 12th.
MiddleChild: August 12th. Well I will be looking forward to that one Berg. We got the "Sexy Lady" joint and the "Sexy Can I" joint and now we got "The Business" joint...Yung Berg is definitely doing his thing.
Yung Berg: Don't forget that "Do That There" record. I got that "Do That There" record blowing up on Rap City real crazy. I'm going to have like three videos on BET at one time. Just watch me.
MiddleChild: We got you. Well Berg, you go lay it down in the studio man and we definitely got your back over at MiddleChild Promotions.
Yung Berg: Alright. Good looking pimp.
MiddleChild: No doubt. Have a good one.
Yung Berg: Alright. One.
